Who you're hiring in Barcelona

I'm Theo Solnik, founder of Haikai Media and the cinematographer on every Barcelona shoot I deliver. I trained at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin under Fred Kelemen, Béla Tarr's cinematographer on The Turin Horse, and have been shooting corporate, documentary and cinema work for over 30 years.

My first feature, Anna Pavlova Lives in Berlin, won the inaugural Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Filmkunst (Prize of the National Gallery for Young Film Art), presented by Bruno Ganz and Iris Berben, and was exhibited daily over four months at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. My work has since screened at festivals and museums in more than 25 countries. On the corporate side I've worked for Google, Pfizer, AWS, Merck, Novo Nordisk, Huawei, Barclays, Boston Consulting Group and Brain Corp, among others.

I work in Spanish and English on set, along with Portuguese, Italian, French, German and Norwegian. For a Barcelona shoot that means I brief participants and direct contributors in the local language, and keep English as the working language for the international team commissioning the job.

Executive interviews in Barcelona

Executive interviews are the most common corporate request I get, filmed in offices, boardrooms, hotels or controlled rented spaces that hold clean sound and a consistent look across several speakers on the same day.

My standard setup is two cameras — a wider primary and a tighter secondary — on a RED Komodo 6K with Zeiss Standard Speed primes at 16, 24, 32, 50 and 85mm. Audio runs to a Sennheiser MKH-416 shotgun or a Sanken COS-11 lavalier, with an independent 32-bit float recorder as backup.

For a communications team coordinating from another country, I structure interviews around a briefing beforehand and fast review links after filming, so people in other time zones can sign off without waiting on a shipped drive.

Case Study: Private Division documentary, Piccolo Studio, Barcelona

Private Division, the Take-Two games label, produced a documentary to mark its fifth anniversary, profiling the studios it works with across several countries. I was director of photography on the Barcelona episode, covering Piccolo Studio — the Barcelona developer known for After Us and Arise: A Simple Story.

My brief for the segment was to film the studio's founder, capture the team at work inside Piccolo's Barcelona office, and shoot exterior b-roll in the streets of the city. The challenge on a piece like this is consistency across a film you only partly shoot: my Barcelona footage had to cut seamlessly alongside episodes filmed by other people in other countries, matching their look while still reading as Barcelona. That means disciplined exposure and colour, interview lighting that holds across a real working space rather than a studio, and observational b-roll that feels natural instead of staged.

What transfers from work like this to corporate production generally is the core documentary craft — putting an interviewee at ease so they speak naturally, seeing and capturing the b-roll that tells the story around them, and delivering footage that matches a wider production's standard. It's the same discipline behind a founder film, an employer-branding piece or a company profile.

Filming logistics and production workflow in Barcelona

Permits: most corporate shoots — offices, studios, private venues — need no municipal authorisation, since they take place on private property with the owner's permission.

Filming in Barcelona's public space is different and is coordinated through the city's film office, Barcelona Film Commission, which handles permits for shooting on streets and public locations. At the time of writing, small handheld filming that doesn't occupy or obstruct public space is treated more lightly than a shoot that needs to reserve street space, park vehicles or set up equipment on public ground, which requires an application and lead time. I handle that process when a public-space location is part of the plan.

Equipment is mine: RED Komodo 6K, Blackmagic Pocket 4K, Sigma fp, Zeiss Standard Speed PL primes, DJI RS 3 Pro with LiDAR and Focus Pro, Zoom F3 recorder, Sennheiser and Sanken microphones. No rental surprises, no last-minute substitutions.

Deliverables and turnaround

Deliverables are prepared for the client's intended use: master files for internal distribution, compressed versions for web, shorter edits for social platforms, or documentary cutdowns where the project calls for it.

Interview-based productions deliver a first cut within 24 to 48 hours of wrap. After your feedback the corrected final arrives within 24 hours. Documentary and multi-day productions follow a schedule agreed in the quote. Final exports: ProRes masters, H.264 web versions, 9:16 social cutdowns, burned-in or sidecar subtitles on request.

Colour grading, sound mix and original music composition are handled in house.

Pricing

Every Barcelona project is quoted individually based on crew size, shoot days, deliverables and post-production scope. No hidden surcharges — insurance and contingency are itemised separately so you see what you're paying for. Payment terms are 50% on booking, 50% on delivery.
